I believe women, minorities and youth need empowerment. Now. It is past time, and way overdue.
But men need empowerment too. Not all men, though. Some men have far too much power, and need disempowerment, if that is a valid word.
To speak of men, women, minorities, youth, children, or any other group is to categorize, to generalize, to lump together. Oprah is a huge example of empowered woman. We applaud her success and the good she does. But what of the millions of unempowered women?
We have heard it said “it’s a man’s world” and so it still may be, but what of the millions of unempowered men? The concentration of power in the hands of a few shows often that, “power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” In our world, it is not necessarily true that for one to become more empowered requires the diminution of power in others. Remember our world is a world of opportunity, of wealth and of abundance. So what is to be done for the empowerment of men now not empowered?
First, we must recognize personal empowerment is a project for us to attend to individually. Second, we must step up to our own responsibility to lift, build and inspire those around us to empower themselves, one by one. Third, we must be ourselves an example of personal empowerment. Finally, empowered men, properly directed, become better providers, husbands, fathers, and contribute much to society. They also promote the empowerment of women.
I ask you to help a boy, a youth, a man who now seems unempowered to recognize his empowerment is a personal responsibility-a project for him, himself. I ask you to lift, build and inspire him to empower himself. This requires the development of a particle of faith, which leads to self confidence. I ask you to be an example yourself of personal empowerment. Remember the man you help empower will be a better son, a better suitor for someone’s daughter, a better husband to you or someone, and a better father. The world needs more of these men.
