Music/movie trivia time! What do Julie Andrews and Elvis have in common? (…cue the Jeopardy music please)
Okay, okay, I’ll tell you: they both sang songs about confidence. If you can name both movies in which they did so, you get a very stylish MPower bag!
But back to the task at hand. A couple of days ago, I was placed in a situation that was very nerve-wracking to me. And, of course, it was a several-hour ordeal, with the most difficult part of the day occurring last. I barely slept the night before, but still had to get up early in the morning to be ready on time. I turned on my psych-myself-up music (including the aforementioned Julie Andrews song) as I got ready — and boy, did I look good! — but was still a nervous wreck when I got there. I had some time before I could go in, and I was basically shaking. So I read some uplifting literature (thank heaven for smartphones, so I can keep cool books with me all the time!)…and still felt scared at the large, important tasks ahead of me. So I called in the reinforcements: my friends and family. And let me tell you, after about 30 minutes of total pep-talkage, I was pumped! I was totally ready to tell the world how awesome I was!

I HAD CONFIDENCE!

It was awesome! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: my support system rocks! Who and what builds you up when you need to feel great about yourself?

Oh, and PS, don’t forget about the contest! The bags are awesome!

I recently watched the movie “The Blind Side” for the first time. For those of you unfamiliar with the film, it’s about a young man from the inner city who is taken in by a well-to-do family, and who eventually grows up to achieve success as a college student and later as a pro football player. It’s based on a true story.

Now, I’m not much for football, but I loved the movie. I loved seeing his fears, his depression, his obstacles early on in the story, and then to see him triumph in the end. I even loved the silly little kid

But most of all, I loved Sandra Bullock’s character! I saw in her a woman filled with a drive for excellence and a love for family. I saw her strength and her determination to help her loved ones be the very best they can be.

…I saw a lot of qualities and attributes I hope to have. (Unfortunately, I think that shade of blonde would look ridiculous on me…lol!)

So I’m thinking–now, this blog’s a little stream-of-consciousness, so bear with me if it doesn’t quite flow perfectly–maybe I’ve got some of them already, at least more than I realize. Okay. And I do need to work to develop some of them. Realizing that doesn’t mean I have to beat myself up for not having those attributes yet; it actually means I’m one step closer to being the woman I want to be because I know correctly where I am on that path.

You know, that was kind of a fun exercise. And now, I have the ability, and the responsibility, to look in the mirror and see myself as the work in progress–operative word progress–that I am. My eyes are open.

One less blind side for me

Hello, blog readers! I just want to tell you that I am having pretty much the coolest experience of my life ever right now, which I will tell you all about another time. I am on this total high. It’s so great!!

So if I’m not blogging about my right now, what the heck am I blogging about? Good question. I told someone recently that I felt like I’d lived a week in two days. It’s been that crazy and non-stop. (Anybody feel the same out there?) I come home every day, exhausted and sore (I’ve decided I need new shoes, because none of the 500 pairs I own are professional, comfortable, and supportive all at once). And you know the funny thing? I love it! It feels good to know that my energy has been spent on something that benefits me as well as other people. Although I’m really tired, I’m also energized not only because I’m helping others, but because I love what I’m doing. It makes me happy.

Plus, I look super cute all dressed up for work – I mean, this is a no-lose situation here!

These one-word titles that begin with the letter “C” seem to be popular lately: “Connection,” “Compassion,” and now “Commitment.” Funny, huh?

Well, since I made my commitment to all of you last week to work on my attitude, I wanted to let you know how I was doing. And as much as I would love to tell you that I’ve done great, I’d much rather tell you the truth…which happens to be that I haven’t done that well. But! there is an upside: I have been more conscious of when my attitude is lousy, and have started to take that consciousness and turn it into action. So, although I still wallow in my negativity more than I should, I now take steps to overcome it more than I used to. Yay progress!

So I ask, what changed? What exactly was the catalyst that sent me from where I was to where I am? (Hint: look at the title of this blog.) Yes! That’s it! My commitment!

Can I tell you how much it meant to me to know that out there in the great wide expanse of the internet, there were people to whom I had made a commitment? Granted, some were people I do not know and may never meet, and most of the ones I do know wouldn’t say anything even if they knew my commitment wasn’t perfectly kept, but still–I had made a commitment, and I was going to keep it. That fact gave me courage and resolve to do the thing that I found difficult, but which I had promised to do.

Commitments are hard–sometimes to make, sometimes to keep. But I have found through this and other experiences that commitments are also empowering. The accountability they require is motivating. What can you commit to do that will empower you?
