Can you handle it????
Last Saturday, I was speaking with a friend. She told me about a merry-go-round she saw on television. It moved up and down as well as going round and round. This may seem like an unusual conversation for adults, but I am currently experiencing an extended episode of vertigo.
As we talked about this merry-go-round, she asked if the spinning world that was shown on TV was how I felt all the time. My condition had improved. The spinning was not constant, but came only when I moved. So, I have become proficient at keeping my head still. Her husband asked if I would ride if I knew it could make the vertigo better.
My response was immediate. I would only ride if I had absolute assurance I would get better. If there was not a guarantee, I would stay where I was because I knew I could handle what was going on now, but unsure I could endure if things became worse. Without the guarantee, I would not even try.
I have reflected upon my response often during the past few days. As a matter of fact, Saturday night, the vertigo increased. Nothing had happened to trigger the increase, but I am withstanding it. This has brought to my attention a remarkable fact: people are resilient. We often think that we are in a place where we are dealing with all the stress we can take. Then, something more comes up. Even though, initially, we think that we cannot endure, we do.
So, do we limit ourselves by not even trying? Do we let opportunities pass us by because we feel that we cannot do anything more?
It is empowering to push ahead through our obstacles and reap the blessings of persistence. How about you? How do you empower yourself to overcome obstacles?
