Listen With Your Eyes
Tomorrow is Rainbow Day! So, I did a Google search (excuse me a Topeka search-did you read the Google April Fool’s Day story?) and found many rainbow songs, mostly children’s. I remember the song I learned in elementary school “red and yellow and pink and green, purple and orange and blue, I can sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow too.” My favorite line of this song is “listen with your eyes and sing everything you see, you can sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow too.”
It’s empowering to think of what we can do as we “listen with our eyes.” My daughter can do that. I once said that if you wanted to know how everyone else is doing ask her. She sits and observes and listens with her eyes…and her heart. I watch as she writes letters, sends packages and tries to encourage others (her blog this week is an example of encouraging others). Our eyes are the “windows to our souls” and if we use them to lift and build ourselves, our family, our friends and communities, we can sing a rainbow too.
This weekend is Easter. We dye eggs in rainbow colors. We buy plastic eggs to fill with candy and hunt. I love it when our children and grandchildren sit down with my husband to dye eggs. This is one of our family traditions. He is careful to set up and to help the children design their rainbow eggs. Last year, he had boiled so many eggs that the younger children lost interest. I walked into the dining room and observed our oldest daughter and her father deep in conversation as they dipped the eggs into the dye, drained and placed them to dry. It was one of those precious moments when I “listened with my eyes.”
Last week, we attended church with our son’s family. I watched as my grandsons hugged each other. They sat, both of them, on their father’s lap and the oldest wrapped his arms around his brother and kissed the baby’s head. I felt those warm feelings that come when we see a rainbow.
I have always loved rainbows. In the song Rainbow Connection from The Muppet Movie, Kermit the frog sings “Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection, the lovers, the dreamers and me.” I hope I get to be there.
What can you do to observe and empower those around you today?
