Whooooo are youuuuuu?

With most things, I don’t have favorites; however, I do have a favorite book. It’s called The Phantom Tollbooth, and it was written by Norton Juster. It’s about a boy named Milo, who is very much disinterested in life and learning until he magically takes a journey into the “Lands Beyond.” In those Lands, with names like Dictionopolis, the Forest of Sight, and the Mountains of Ignorance, he meets many individuals whose unique personalities and perspectives teach him a lot about who he is and why the world is so wonderful.

Each of us must go on a journey of self-discovery. Milo’s involved traveling to a magical land, but ours might take us through the less-fantastical cross-country moves, job losses or gains, births, deaths, weddings, funerals, joys, sorrows, successes, failures, or any combination of these and/or other life-changing events.

But it’s not the events that shape our lives; it’s what we learn from them, and what we do with what we’ve learned that determines who we are. Without spoiling the book, I can tell you that Milo learns what he is capable of–and that he is able to do far more than he thought a little boy could ever do. So I ask: what are you going through now that has the potential to change who you are? What are you learning? And who will you be as a result of this experience?

We are not static individuals; we are perpetually growing, learning, and changing. Knowing who we are, and acting accordingly, is life-changingly empowering. And becoming who we are capable of being is potentially earth-shaking. Who are you, and how can what you are doing now help you become who you want to be?
